Michael Orrin Byrd
Michael Orrin Byrd passed away on January 20, 2022 at the age of 70 in his Mobile, Alabama home after a long, heroic battle with Parkinson's disease.
He was born in Mobile County on December 8, 1951 to the late Alex Monroe Byrd and Reba Faye Covan, and is survived by his wife of 49 years, Delorese (nee Williams), their daughter, Jessica Byrd, and son, Orrin Byrd; his sister, Janice (Jimmy) Coffman; his brother, Dwight Byrd; his brother, David (Darlene) Byrd; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Byrd.
Michael retired in 2005 from the City of Mobile Fire-Rescue Department with 31 years of service that began in 1973 when he joined as a firefighter. During his many years with the Department he was driven to lead others and serve his community in many positions within the Department. At the time of his retirement he served as assistant fire chief for the City of Mobile.
Not only was Michael a community servant and leader, he was a devoted and family-oriented husband, father, brother, and life-long learner. All of his time outside of community service was spent fellowshipping with family or exploring the outdoors, from hunting and fishing, to taking daily 'nature walks'. His desire to learn and seek all that life has to offer was seen through his interests in motorcycles and auto racing, teaching himself another language or to play the guitar, and fixing or building anything his family required. He was our hero and will be missed and cherished for always. Graveside services and interment will be held on Monday, January 24, 2022 at 2pm in Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
