Myrtle Frances Carlisle Newell, Nov.7, 1926 - August 6, 2016; Born in Gilbertown, Alabama,
She was previously a long time resident of Irvington, Alabama for 75 years where she raised her
9 children, and then she moved to Mobile, Alabama to be closer to her children.
Mrs. Newell, 89, died peacefully on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at Little Sisters of the Poor,
where she was a resident for the past year, surrounded by her loving family. As a devout
Catholic, she was a previous member of St. Margaret's Catholic Parish in Bayou La Batre,
Alabama for 25 years, before moving to St. Vincent's Catholic Parish in Mobile, Alabama as one
of the founding members. She was devoted to her family, and very generous of her time and
talents. She was an outstanding cook, baker, seamstress and gardener, and shared the fruits
of her labor with her family as well as those less fortunate.
Preceded in death by her Husband, Harry H. Newell; two Sisters, Lillie Mae Mosely and Nora
Gipson, and one brother, W. M. "Buster" Carlisle. She ieaves to cherish her love and memory,
nine children 4 sons, Ronnie (Rena) Newell of Crestview, FL., Harry (Rosemary) Newell of
Thomson, GA., William (Lavada) Newell of Vancleave, MS., and Robert Newell of Coden, AL;
five daughters, Theresa N. Jernigan of Mobile, Margaret Newell of Long Beach, CA., Beverly
(Mike) Adamson of Birmingham, AL., Barbara (Ron) Yokley of Mobile, and Susan (Gene) Logan
of Mobile; one sister, Willie Mae Neal of Vicksburg, MS, 26 Grandchildren, 46 Greatgrandchildren,
11 grea-tgreat grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She also leaves a very dear lifelong friend, Ms. Trula Strachan of Irvington, AL.
She also loved her host of granddogs and grandcats. Active Pallbearers are Joseph Newell,
Matthew Newell, Glenn Fairley, Christopher Jernigan, Jonas Adamson, and Jeff Woodham.
Honorary Pallbearers are the Caregivers of the Sacred Heart. We are thankful and grateful for
their love, kindness, and compassion. Especially Sister Ellen Ann.Mrs. Newell,
besides her many talents of sewing, cooking, and gardening, never shied away
from hard work, working several years as a waitress at the original Bayley's Restuarant, a
seamstress at Vanity Fair, and lastly making roughly one thousand biscuits daily at Hardee's,
Theodore, AL. until long past the typical retirement. Her gardening skills, besides growing fruits,
vegetables, and flowers, included self taught cross breeding of azaleas. An avid learner, she
learned this and many other things from her trips to the public library. Being an excellent
seamstress, she made all of her daughters clothes, including their Catholic school uniforms,
Christmas, Easter and special occasion dresses. She, additionally would purchase fabric and
sew clothes for the needy. Included in her excellent cooking skills, mom was an avid
canner/preserver of foods. She loved canning/preserving figs, especially eating figs. She
prepared many meals for her family from the bounty of her garden. When a parishioner of St.
Margaret's, Mrs. Newell would make her deliciously famous pralines for the parish lawn parties.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 11, at 1:00 p.m. at Little Sisters of the Poor, followed
by services in the Chapel. Interment will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Three Notch
Rd., Mobile, Al, following the Services. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Little Sisters
of the Poor, McGill Avenue, Mobile, AL.
