Nelda Britton

Nelda Dyess Britton (Mrs. W. H. Britton Jr.) died Monday, Oct. 23, 2017 in Mobile, AL. She was born in Bay Springs, Ms. in 1927 and moved to Mobile in 1934. She was a graduate of Murphy High School and Providence School of Nursing. She also received a Masters in Educational Leadership from the from the University of South Alabama. She married William Horace Britton Jr. in 1952. They had one daughter, Rebecca Faye Britton.

Mrs. Britton is survived by her daughter; her brother, James Andrew Dyess of Mobile; two nieces, Linda Parker of Phoenix City, AL, and Deborah Smith of The Villages, FL; a nephew Arthur E. Dyess of Mobile; and numerous great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, and a great great great niece and nephew.

As a private scrub nurse she worked with Dr. Warren Yemm and Dr. Church Murdoch. With them she did the first open heart surgery in Mobile. She went on to teach at Providence School of Nursing for over 15 years and presided over their last graduation ceremony. She then worked as the Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Operating Room with Teaching Responsibilities at the University of South Alabama Medical Center until her retirement in 1999 at the age of 72. She was one of the founders of the local chapter of the Association of Operating Room Nurses. She served on the National Board of that organization and on their National Education Committee.

She was a founding member of St. Dominic's Parish, and with her husband was a member of The Etruscan Mardi Gras Society where she served in many capacities including president. She was beloved by the members of her family and her close friends, as well as many of the medical community who she taught and mentored through her fifty plus years as an O.R. nurse and educator.

There will be a visitation at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Thursday, October 26 from 12:00 noon until 2:00p.m. with services immediately following in the chapel at 2pm. Burial in Mobile Memorial Gardens
