REV. CHARLES PAUL WOOD
Aug. 22, 1933-Aug. 21, 2018
The Rev. Charles Paul Wood, 84, departed this life for heavenly union with Jesus Christ on August 21, 2018-approximately six hours short of his 85th birthday. For the past 43 years he was a resident of Mobile and a loyal member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church, where he served as an Associate Pastor from 1975 until his retirement from full-time duties in 2001. In the following years he continued his life of ministry and service to others by teaching the senior adult Sunday School class, establishing a network of dear friends who, in recent months, kindly ministered to his needs. Charles was born in Eldorado, Arkansas, on August 22, 1933, the third of what would be five children of Archie Wood and Essie Alma Wood. Early in his childhood the family moved to Monroe, Louisiana, and Charles met Joan Malone, who would later become his wife. However, before that romance blossomed, his parents relocated to Murphysboro, Illinois, where he completed his last two years of high school and initiated his college education in nearby Carbondale at Southern Illinois University. Charles then returned to Monroe and enrolled at the institution formerly known as Northeast Louisiana State College. He also became a youth leader at Central Baptist Church, where he and Joan were married in 1954. Shortly after he earned his baccalaureate degree in speech education in 1956, the young couple and their firstborn child moved to Texas for Charles to pursue graduate studies in preparation for Christian ministry. In July 1958 he graduated with a master's degree in religious education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the Wood family returned to northeast Louisiana for Charles to serve as the Minister of Education at First Baptist Church of Monroe. In 1965, following the birth of two more children, they moved to northwest Louisiana, where their fourth child would be born, as Charles accepted the call to service at First Baptist Church of Bossier City. Ten years later they relocated permanently to Mobile, and Charles joined the ministerial staff at Cottage Hill Baptist Church. Charles was preceded in death by his spouse of over 63 years, Joan, as well as his parents and three brothers. He is survived by his son Roger Wood and wife Marla of Houston, Texas; his son Terry Wood and wife Donna of Mobile; his son Glen Wood and Arleane Huesman of Mobile; his daughter Jamey Wood Centanni and husband Paul of Elberta, Alabama; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, and numerous other relatives, including his sister Shirley Baker of Searcy, Arkansas. The Wood family invites you to attend a memorial service celebrating the life of its beloved patriarch, Charles, on Saturday, September 15, 2018, at 1 PM in the main auditorium of Cottage Hill Baptist Church (with visitation starting at 11 AM). In lieu of flowers, it is the family's request that any tokens of remembrance be in the form of donations to Cottage Hill Baptist Church (www.cottagehill.org) or to Mission Dignity (www.missiondignity.org). "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace." (1 Peter 4:10). Condolences may be offered at www.mobilememorialfunerals.com.
