Rita Schlecht

December 29, 1926 — March 31, 2016

Rita Gasperino Schlecht of Mobile, age 89, passed away at a local hospital on March 31, 2016. A native of New Britain, Connecticut, she grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she graduated from Olney High School and Pierce College. She later met and married Stan, her beloved husband of 44 years. They lived in New London, Connecticut and Vallejo, California before settling in Mobile, Alabama, where he worked for Ingalls Shipbuilding and she went to work for the University of South Alabama. She worked tirelessly as a secretary for the Head of the Communications Department from 1975 until she retired in 2005. She loved every minute of her work at the University and the interaction she had with the professors and students.
Several years ago she went on the trip of her lifetime to meet and visit with relatives in Italy.
She was a long time member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
She is predeceased by her husband Stan and survived by her two daughters, Christine (Mobile) and Lisa (Sarasota, FL), one brother, Robert (Karen) Gasperino of Las Vegas, NV and his son John (Mari) Gasperino of Annapolis, MD and his daughter Margaret Ann (David) Rosenlund of Stinson Beach, CA.
A special thank you, to Dr. Kristina Ray, and several special nurses, and staff who took such good care of her while she was in the hospital.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at 11am in the parlor of St. Paul's Episcopal Church followed by a memorial service at 12 pm in the small chapel. A graveside service will follow at Mobile Memorial Gardens.
