Robert Kent

April 25, 1949 — August 19, 2018

Robert "Larry" Kent a native of Mobile, AL and resident of Irvington, AL. passed away Sunday, August 19, 2018. His job on earth complete, he returned to his heavenly home after a valiant battle with Multiple Myeloma.
After graduating from B.C. Rain High School in 1968, Larry joined the Marine Corps and served honorably. His bravery as a combat solider in the Vietnam War conveys his respect and love for his country. He was very proud to be a United States Marine.
Upon returning from Vietnam, Larry married his lifelong sweetheart Gloria Sheehy in1970. He soon became a firefighter for the Mobile Fire Department. While working as a firefighter, he along with his brother David, opened Kent's Karpets. Their business served the community for many years.
After retiring from the fire department, Larry worked as a Unit Director for the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Alabama. He was later the Executive Director of the Tillman's Corner Community Center. His influence, love, and compassion was felt by countless.
Larry served his community through many capacities. He coached football, baseball and softball. He was president of many organizations such as Mobile Youth Football, Theodore Athletic Association, Theodore High School Booster Club and Southwest Mobile County Chamber of Commerce. As a member of the Conde Cavaliers for 40 years, Larry made many lifelong friends. He was an active participant with the P.L. Wilson Detachment # 447. He attended Theodore First Baptist Church.
Larry had a true servant's heart. His life was spent pursuing the happiness of everyone he knew. He lived for his family and was an amazing husband, father and grandfather. He was an extraordinary leader, role model and selfless hero.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 48 years, Gloria Sheehy Kent, children, Derek (Andi) Kent, Kevin (Christy) Kent, Beth (Casey) Prine, and Mindy (Jason) Downey; his grandchildren, Andrew and Mary Elizabeth Kent, Lauren, John and Megan Kent, Cooper and Addison Prine, and Caroline and Olivia Downey; his brothers, David (Faye) Kent, Billy (Marilyn) Kent, and sister Madge Kent. He is preceded in death by his parents John and Margaret Kent, along with his brother John Clifford Kent Jr.
Visitation for family and friends will be at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held Thursday, August 23, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. with Dr. David Gill officiating in the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2018, at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to University of South Alabama Children's and Women's Hospital, Larry Kent Memorial. 300 Alumni Circle Mobile, AL 36688
