Robert Edward Lowell, Sr. passed into the Lord's presence Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the age of 93. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Ralph and Francis Lowell; his sister and brother, Evelyn Lowell Trainor and Gordon Camille (Boots) Lowell; and his beloved wife of 67 years, Lillie Mae Hilburn Lowell. His survivors include his sister, Mary Lowell Stephens; his children, Mary Ann Lowell (Ted) Montgomery, Robert Edward "Bobby" (Carolyn) Lowell, Jr., Janice Lowell (Dennis) Rogers, Judy Lowell (Jerry) Hewes, and Joann Lowell James; grandchildren, Ashlee Montgomery (Scott) Gordon, Melissa Montgomery Summey, Robby (Stephanie) Montgomery, Brad (Nici) Lowell, Derrick (Brittany) Rogers, Jarrod (Katie) Hewes, Stephanie (Ryan) Wellman, Ryan Rogers, Jaclyn Hewes (Mark) Brunson, Jessica Rogers (Neil) Hudson, Blake James, and Julia James; 12 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. At 18, after graduating from Murphy High School, he became a part of the "Greatest Generation" when he enlisted in the Army, June 9, 1943. He was sent to Ft. McClellan for training and then on to the South Pacific to serve 4 years in World War II. He served in the battles of New Guinea, Luzon, and was decorated with meritorious medals and awards for participation in the liberation of the Philippines. After 3 1/2 years of battle, and upon the surrender of Japan, he was sent into Tokyo as a Military Policeman with the peace keeping forces headed by Gen. Douglas McArthur. After being discharged Feb. 5, 1946, he returned home to Mobile, AL to start his new life. He met his soon to be wife, Lillie Mae Hilburn, and they were married on the 12th of June, 1946. He became a fireman with the City of Mobile, but soon after received an opportunity to apply at Brookley Air Force Base to work in civil service for the Air Force. He was hired by the Air Force where he became a ground electronics engineer, traveling to Air Force bases all over the country, establishing phone line systems. Studying avidly, and after many training programs, he soon started working in establishing radar systems in different places not only in the USA, but all over the world as a part of the GEEIA division. When Brookley Field shut down, he chose to transfer to Tinker Air Force Base, Midwest City, OK to finish his career. He traveled from Oklahoma to the Arctic where he became a member of the Arctic Club, to the Caribbean, to the Mideast, spending most of his time in Iran. Upon retiring from civil service, he settled back in Mobile, working in security at Mobile Greyhound Park and 5 years later began his real retirement. Now at home, he farmed his property, with some of the best produce ever tasted, did odd jobs, but mostly took care of his family. Hobbies: He was an avid hunter and fisherman all of his life, and taught his children the love of these hobbies, even teaching his new sons-in-law to hunt and fish as he did. He built his own boats with a master plan created by him and one of his boyhood friends. When his wife passed away five years ago, he did not want to go back to their homestead, so he got an assisted living apartment at Atria Senior Living, where he loved the lifestyle and the people. He kind of became an unofficial ambassador. He loved his church, First Baptist Tillman's Corner, and his Lord, Jesus. He traveled so much in his lifetime, he never got to enjoy going to church on a regular basis. But, he joined a Sunday school class of great men, and never looked back. He was just waiting to go every week to sing and worship. He was forever grateful to have been a part of Honor Flight #3 and, as a family, we wish to personally thank Dr. Barry Booth in his efforts to establish this wonderful tribute to our father and his fellow soldiers. Our family will also forever be grateful to the staff and other personnel at Atria Senior Living for his wonderful experience in his new found home. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to his caregiver, Drashundra Moore, who helped him so much in his final days and became our dear friend. What a blessing you were to him and our family. Serving as active pallbearers will be Mr. Lowell's grandsons and great-grandsons, Robby Montgomery, Brad Lowell, Derrick Rogers, Jarrod Hewes, Ryan Rogers, Andrew Montgomery, Cameron Gordon and Braxton Summey. Honorary pallbearers will be Ted Montgomery, Dennis Rogers, Jerry Hewes, Scott Gordon, Mark Brunson, Neil Hudson, Ryan Wellman and Jack Thomas, Sr.'s Sunday School Class at First Baptist Tillman's Comer. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 12:00 Noon from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday morning from 10:00 AM until service time. Interment will follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
