Robert Terrill McConnell (Bobby) was born on November 16, 1933, at the home of his parents, Joseph & Gertrude McConnell in Bayou La Batre, AL. He passed away on June 24, 2021 at Covenant Hospice. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Jean Wiggins on April 21, 1954. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1954-1958 during the Korean War and was stationed in Tachikowa, Japan. Upon returning to the states he was stationed in Rantoul, Illinois, and Albany, Georgia. They moved back to Mobile in 1958.
Bobby wore many hats throughout his lifetime. He was a truck driver, a realtor, and worked at local factories. He retired from Teledyne Continental Motors where he was an aircraft engine inspector. He loved to work with his hands. He enjoyed wood-working and wood carving. He loved being outdoors. He loved working the land, fishing, and hunting. He loved raising animals and farming. In his eyes, the bigger the garden the better! He loved spending time in his hot house grafting fruit trees and starting his plants from seeds. He was a great storyteller and was quite the prankster growing up. But most of all he loved spending time with his family and taking vacations.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Barbara, as well as 2 infant sons, Robert Michael and Steven Frederick McConnell. He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Jones (Henry), his granddaughters, Amber Shirley (Chris), Amanda Sanders (Joe), Kandy Tillman, and Kasey Jones, and great grandchildren, Kaileigh Shirley, Ethan Farish, Kennedy Shirley, Addison Sporna, Jaelyn Huffman, and Camdyn Shirley.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 30th at First Baptist St. Elmo from 11:00-12:00 followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:00pm. A graveside service will follow at Oddfellows Cemetery.
