Russell Hayes, age 83, died peacefully at home in the company of his loving wife, Kathy, on Friday, November 18, 2016 after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell Mason Hayes, Sr. and Katharine Greenwood Brady Hayes, and his step-sister, Beverly Dietz Hogate. Dr. Hayes earned his Bachelor and Master's Degrees in Electrical Engineering at the University of Louisville and received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Ohio University. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in Kentucky and Alabama. He was the first Chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of South Alabama, starting in 1973. He was appointed Emeritus Professor of Electrical Engineering "in recognition of his extraordinary accomplishments and dedicated service to the University including achievements in teaching, in the generation of new knowledge through research and scholarship, and for serving as a consistently inspiring influence to students over a long period of time." He continued teaching classes for several years after his retirement in 1995. Dr. Hayes enjoyed being active and, at various times in his life, enjoyed golfing, scuba diving, bicycling, camping, square dancing and tennis. He was a member of Buccaneer Yacht Club for many years and loved sailing his Daysailer and Cape Dory on Mobile Bay. Dr. Hayes rescued and coddled a succession of lucky cats and dogs and gave them great names like "Fuzzy Wuzzy Fancy Pants" and "Mister Budda-Pest" and "Poochini." Dr. Hayes is survived by his wife, Kathleen Brugess Hayes, whom he dearly loved, and his children, Charles Kevin Hayes (Sonya) of Mobile, AL, Heather Lynn Daniels (Michael) of Mobile, AL and step-son, Craig Scott Stefan (Katherine) of Newnan, GA. He is also survived by his brother, Ed (Bear) Brady Hayes (Teri) of Portland, OR, and sister, Patricia G. Hayes Carpenter (Buster), of Mesa AZ; grandchildren, Samantha and Taylor Daniels; step-grandchildren, Sara, Andrew, Philip, Mary Grace and Anna Hope Stefan, Ariane McWilliams Clark (Milton) and James McWilliams; many other relatives and friends. Russ was a kind, gentle person who will be greatly missed. He was a follower of Jesus and a member of Christ Anglican Church. A memorial service will be held at the church, located at 3275 Halls Mill Road, at 10:00 AM Wednesday, December 14, 2016. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:00 AM until service time. Reverend Ken Aycock will officiate. Inurnment of ashes will follow in the Cremation Garden of Mobile Memorial Gardens, 6100 Three Notch Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Christ Anglican Church, 3275 Halls Mill Road, Mobile Alabama 36606, www.christanglican.org.
