Sarah Deckelman McFadden, a native of the Washington DC area, has been living in the Mobile area for the past 2 1/2 years. She died Monday night, September 18, 2017 at Providence Hospital. Sarah, also called "Sally", was born on June 21, 1933 in the Washington DC area. She was one of eight children to the late Thomas Henry Deckelman and the late Ellen McCrory Deckelman. She is preceded in death by her brothers, John and William Deckelman. She is survived by her siblings, Ellen Rowena Greene, Frank Deckelman and his wife, Sue, and Elizabeth Deckelman, all of the Washington DC area, She is survived by four children and 10 grandchildren. Kathleen Mahoney of the Mobile area, and her children Christopher Mahoney of Mobile, and Laura Mahoney James and her husband Clarence James of Mountain Brook. Dr. Ellen McFadden Gross and her husband Dr. Charles Gross of Tuscaloosa and their 2 children, Laura Gross Newman, and her husband Lucian Newman IV, and Charles Thomas Gross. Clare McFadden Neyland, and her husband, Robert of Houston and their 4 children, Sarah, Ryan, Molly and Jack. John McFadden of Houston, and his wife Cindy, and their 2 children, Christina and Gabriella. Sarah McFadden was raised by her parents in the Anacostia area of Washington, DC. She graduated first in her class from St. Theresa's Elementary School, as well as first in her class from Notre Dame Academy High School. She attended Immaculata Junior College, also in the Washington, DC area, where she majored in foreign languages: French, German, Italian and also in Mathematics. She was Valedictorian of her graduating class. While in school, she was a steady volunteer at the Little Sisters of the Poor Nursing Home in the DC area. During her schooling years, she was trained in opera and the piano. She sang the lead role in many operas while in high school, and even had her own public radio program for 30 minutes each week singing opera during her Junior and Senior years of High School. After college, Sarah went to work as a steno at the FBI office in the Washington DC area, where she met her husband and father of her 4 children, the late Edward F. McFadden. The couple transferred to Little Rock, Arkansas after Edward McFadden became a Special Agent for the FBI. It was in Little Rock that the four children were raised. While there, Sarah performed at the Arkansas State Opera Company, where she had many lead roles. Sarah was a devout Catholic throughout her entire life, and a strong supporter of the Right to Life Movement. She attended daily mass most of her life, even into her early 80's. She has passed now from this life to be with her beloved parents, grandparents and brothers, and will be greatly missed by her surviving family. She has gone on to be with the Lord, and to receive her heavenly reward. A mass will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Mobile, AL on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 11:00 AM. She will be laid to rest in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
