Sergeant Major Richard D. Johnston, USMC, Retired.
Born on February 16, 1950 in Manchester, England; passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2018 in Daphne, Alabama. He was previously a resident of Grand Bay, Alabama. Richard was a 1969 graduate of Davidson High School, where he was Captain of the football team and lead them to the first championship game. Known by his friends as "Sgt.Major", he enlisted in the USMC in 1969, serving tours in Vietnam and later tours in Desert Shield/Desert Storm before retiring with over 20 years in the USMC, as Sergeant Major. He also was a longtime employee of Ingalls Shipbuilding, worked at The Strickland Youth Center where he was the Assistant Drill Instructor to the Juvenile Delinquent Boot Camp. He entered the Mobile Police Academy in 1995 in Class #20 and was chosen to be the Team Leader, after 20 years of dedicated service to the Mobile Police Department, he retired in 2015 as a K-9 Officer.
He is survived by his children, Buffy M. Johnston, Richard Adam Johnston; granddaughter, Camryn Thomaston; siblings, Jamie (Maria) Johnston, Johnny (Laurie) Johnston, David James (Linda) Johnston, Freddie (Joanne) Johnston; girlfriend, Becky Montgomery; special cousin, Mickey (Helen) Smith; mother of his children, Phyllis Ducote (Lou) Dixon, brothers-sister in laws; Cynthia (Ernie) Imsand, Brian (Twylia) Ducote, Mark (Vickee) Ducote; his USMC Brothers and his City of Mobile Police Department Brothers in Blue.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Thursday 12 - 2pm. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
