Sherman Alton Cherry, Jr. (April 12, 1944- March 23, 2021)
Sherman was born on April 12, 1944, to Sherman A. Cherry, Sr. and Louise in Mobile, where he resided most of his life. He had a loving home and did the usual things a young boy and man would do. He went to school, played sports and finished high school as would be expected. He was much more intelligent than his grades in school would ever show. However, most importantly, he met the love of his life, Sandra, while in high school. This would change the course of history for our family. As they started their life together, he joined and proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corp. While in the Corp at Camp Lejune, he and Sandy had their first child, Michael Andrew. Upon discharge, they moved back to Mobile to start the next chapter. Always dutiful to his family, he went straight to work. He finished college at South Alabama with a degree in business. The next steps included moves to Jackson, New Orleans and, finally Lafayette, before the final move back to Mobile. It was in Lafayette, almost 10 years after their son, that the family welcomed a daughter, Angela Faith, and the family felt complete. It should be noted that Andy was the brains of his two children, while Angie was dependant on Sherman for most of her daily needs. To this day, she still cannot change a tire. While in Lafayette, Sherman left the constraints of office life and tried other occupations, such as oil rig work. It was quickly decided the family would starve as this way of life would not work. Honestly, he could get motion sickness in the pool! Lastly, back to Mobile to do what he really knew and loved. Construction was what he knew his entire life with his father and brother, Bill. There is obviously a lot in between all those years, as you would expect, as life is what happens when you're busy making plans. Four great joys came into his life-his beloved grandchildren. As you get older and don't have to raise your own children, you are blessed with your grandchildren. Sherman took great pride in and enjoyed his grandchildren immensely, getting to do all those things that a responsible adult can't do with their own children. He taught them each so many things, especially swimming and driving at way too early an age! Another great love of his was his love of cars, and if you knew him at all, you already know this. If you were to drive anywhere near his house, there is a burnout area on the road to guide you far more easily than GPS ever could! In his later years, his beloved black dachshund was allowed on these rides. Standing by his side since the beginning has been the love of his life, Sandra, married 57 years. He is also survived by his son Andy and his wife, Louise, and grandchildren Shelton and fiancé Macy, Louie and Ashton, all of Kingsport, Tennessee. He is survived by his daughter Angie Harris and granddaughters, Abigail and Anna Clason. He is also survived by his sister in laws, Barbara (Joe) Crump and Cindy Cherry, and numerous nieces and nephews. We honor him with love and appreciation for all he has done for our family. While he will be greatly missed each and every day, we are stronger and better people for having him in our lives. Daddy, we will be fine. Love you always.
