Susan Jayne (Holston) Olsen, 57, passed peacefully in her home on July 10, 2020. She is survived by her son, Edward J Powers IV; daughter, Cassie N Powers; parents, Wesley and Faye Holston; sisters Katherine Montalvo and Nancy Holston; and her faithful canine companion, Wascal Olsen.
Born and raised in Mobile, Susan occasionally attended Davidson High School on days she wasn’t skipping school to nurture her untamed, rebellious spirit. Her defiant ethos and love of horses once paved her way through the wrong gate at the Kentucky Derby where she enjoyed the perks of VIP status for the cost of a general admission ticket.
Susan had a knack for raising things. Throughout her life, she raised horses, goats, chickens, and every dog and cat that crossed her path. She raised gardens. Her green thumb and talent for decorating any space fueled her love for intricate terrariums and fairy gardens. She knew how to raise a toast, arrived early for the party and was always the last one to leave. She raised two beautiful children to appreciate the little things, to celebrate each birthday like it was the last, and to always bet on her lucky number, five.
Knowing she was in the final days of her life, Susan threw caution to the wind once more, just like she had always done. She spent her last day doing what she loved, being with her children, fishing, and enjoying the great outdoors. A carefree rebel until the very end, Susan never conceded to her cancer. She never backed down. She raged against the dying of the light. She was courageous and brave, and in our hearts, she’ll always stay forever young. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Susan’s honor to the Mobile SPCA.
