NEWBILL
Vernon Alton Newbill, resident of Mobile, died on January 3, 2016 at the age of 71. He was born in Leakesville, Mississippi, to Vody Alton and Earlyne Rebecca Newbill on September 25, 1944. Vernon's life reflected his love for God and his Son Jesus. At University Church of Christ, he served as a deacon for 16 years, an elder for 26 years, and a Bible class teacher for over 43 years.(2015) He also made mission trips to the Philippine Islands. Unselfish, generous, and dedicated, he also was an inspiration to his family, relatives, friends, and church members.
He was a wonderful husband to his wife, Camilla Ann, a caring father to his children, Vernon Alton, Jr, Lana Renee Newbill Thompson, and Vincent Bradley, and a great role model as a grandfather to Bradford Phillip Thompson, Grace Katherine Thompson, Stanley Alton Newbill, Craig Vincent Newbill, and Bradley Connor Newbill. Precious memories will reside in their hearts forever.
Vernon graduated from Vigor High School in 1962 where he played varsity football, basketball, and baseball. At Vigor he was a member of 2 state championship teams in football and baseball. He played 4 years of varsity football at the University of Alabama from 1962-1965 and was a member of the 1964 and 1965 national championship teams. Later he coached Municipal Park football and baseball for 14 years, followed by coaching Mobile Christian Middle School football for 15 years.(2015) Working with young people in athletics and seeing them mature and reach their potential gave him much joy and satisfaction.
Professionally, he became a licensed professional electrical engineer in 1972. He was employed by International Paper 37 years and by Kellogg, Brown, and Root for 10 years (2015). He enjoyed his work with many paper mills across the country and gained many friends in each of them.
He is predeceased by his father and mother, Vody and Earlyne Newbill.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Camilla Ann Jones Newbill; three children, Vernon Alton Newbill, Jr. (Deana), Lana Renee Thompson (John), and Vincent Bradley Newbill (Dana); five grandchildren, Bradford Phillip and Grace Catherine Thompson, Stanley Alton Newbill, and Craig Vincent and Bradley Connor Newbill as well as siblings Vaudie Dunn (Bill), James Earl Newbill (Maureen), and Kay Haas (Mark).
Visitation will be held from Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Thursday, January 7, 2015 from 12:30 until 2:00 PM followed by funeral services in the chapel. Interment will be at Mobile Memorial Gardens.
