Walter Lee "Bootsie" Wilson, Sr. died peacefully on December 12, 2016 in Mobile, AL at the age of 82. Walter is survived by his wife, Georgia Alyce Hunt Wilson; children, Janice Wilson (Tony) Montoya, Cindy Wilson, Walter (Bonnie) Wilson, Jr., Lynn Wilson (Richard) Rone; Anne Wilson; Keith (Sheryl) Wilson and Tracy Allen; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; former wife and mother of six of his children, Janice Wilson; siblings, Sylvia Thompson, Mary Tatum; Raymond Wilson; Brenda Few and Janith (Vernon) Bentley; other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Wilma Wilson and Doris Lee Bankston Wilson; grandson, Shane Lee Winsett and siblings, Carlton Ray Wilson and Carolyn Fay James. Walter was born September 5, 1934 in Baton Rouge, LA. He moved to the Prichard/Plateau area around 1944 and graduated from Murphy High School in 1954. He became a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 119 December 9, 1952. Walter has been a pipefitter and a member of Local 119 for 64 years. He served a Business Manager of Local 119 from 1978-1989. He traveled with Local 119 and worked in various places, such as the U.S. Virgin Islands, Alaska, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Virginia, Maryland, etc. Walter passed on his trade to two of his children, Cindy and Walt, who are also members of Local 119. His children remember Walter as a hard-working father who encouraged them to pursue their goals and always supported them. Walter was also an avid pilot and logged many hours in the air. He was an incredible athlete as a Golden Glove boxer. He was a compassionate individual who loved people and who was passionate about the welfare of others, always putting the needs of others before his own. He was a Mason and a Shriner and rode with the Shriner Motor Core. He was a member of the Southern Cruisers Motorcycle Club and was involved in charity rides. He served on the Board of the Child Advocacy Center, Bay Area Food Bank and the United Way. Funeral services are scheduled for 12:00 Noon, Friday, December 16, 2016 from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Pastor David Sargent will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 10:00 AM until 12:00 Noon. Interment will follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens. A reception will follow at Tillman's Corner Senior Center on Nevius Road. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Walter's life. The family would like to thank Dr. Shameer Abrahim and associates, as well as Dr. Stephen Dill with Covenant Hospice, with special thanks to Patrice, Katherine, Rebecca and Cathy for their compassion and care of Walter during his transition.
