William Joseph "Joe" Buck (70) of Fairhope, Alabama died May 22, 2016 from complications of pneumonia. He is survived by his wife, Gayle Buck. Joe was born in Mobile, Alabama, to Kennith Eugene Buck and the late Erma Jean Simpson Buck in 1945.
Described by many as a brilliant man, Joe earned his master's degree in plasma physics from Auburn University and completed a significant portion of his doctoral research in atomic fusion before being called into military service. He returned to Mobile and spent more than 40 years working as an engineer, specializing in industrial refrigeration systems. Throughout his career, he taught and mentored mechanical engineering students at the University of South Alabama. Joe was a member of the College of Fellows and past vice president for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Webb and Cheri (Jimmy) Lumpkin, by his late wife Celeste; and three stepchildren Ryan (Kelly) Foster, Kate (Brad) Davis, and Dana (Prent) Davis, as well as, seven grandchildren. Joe is also survived by one sister, Marilyn Pace, as well as, a number of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 10:00-12:00 with a service in the chapel at noon.
