The family of William Calvin Mitchell is sad to announce his death on Friday, March 10, 2023, at the age of 91. Mr. Mitchell was born on July 5, 1931, in Red Level, Covington County, Alabama, to Raz Barrett Mitchell and Minnie Leathie King Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his wives, Rita Iomogene Day Mitchell, who died on September 15, 1993, and Mary Lillian Garrick Mitchell, who died on September 27, 2012, as well as his siblings Roy L. Mitchell, John T. Mitchell, Bertha Rae Mitchell Turner, Herman Earl Mitchell, and Bertie Mae Mitchell Evans.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his children, Peggy Ann Mitchell Schemensky, Michael Andrew Mitchell, and wife Valerie Lund Mitchell, and Ronald Alan Mitchell, all of Mobile, and two grandchildren, Jenny Schemensky of Mobile and Martha Blessing Mitchell of Seattle, Washington. He also leaves a stepson, Ronald Scott Downey of Thomasville, Alabama.
Mr. Mitchell served in the United States Army, serving as a medic in the Korean War theater. He was an active lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans and held a number of offices in those organizations.
Following his military service, he was employed by the United States Civil Service at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile, Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield, Utah, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. He was subsequently employed by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, from which he retired in 1995.
A graveside service for immediate family and close friends will be held on Wednesday, March 15, at Mobile Memorial Gardens. The family requests that flowers not be sent but that donations in lieu thereof be made to the VFW, the American Legion, the DAV, or to a charity of the donor's choosing.
Bill Mitchell will be lovingly remembered and missed by his family and friends.
