William Owen

Dr. William Norris Owen, III peacefully passed away on Friday, August 9, 2019. William was born in Hattiesburg, MS to William Norris Owen, Jr. and Genevieve Rice Howard Owen, but spent the majority of his life in Mobile, AL and Chattanooga, TN. He married the love of his life, Bonnie Moore Owen in November of 1968 in her hometown of Port Gibson, MS.

Throughout his life he always followed his passions which included working to put a man on the moon with NASA and Boeing during the Apollo missions in Huntsville, AL. He then fell in love with technology and education and dedicated over 20 years to learning and teaching Computer Science at the University of South Alabama. He was a proud graduate of UMS, Mississippi State, and South Alabama.

He loved aircraft of all types and enjoyed bringing joy to others by sharing his passions with many different activities including sewing, art, and even a musical animated Christmas light show.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bonnie; his son, William “Billy” Norris Owen, IV; his daughter, Cathy Owen Dew; his sisters, Genevieve Owen Morris and Mary Claire Owen, as well as his stepbrother, Glen Wilson. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his stepmother, Edith “Nell” R. Owen. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at 12:00 Noon from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday morning beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
