Wilma Desak

November 23, 1923 — November 9, 2017

On Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 5:15 PM we lost our beloved Matriarch Wilma Desak, who died peacefully in her sleep at her daughter's home in Anthony, FL. She spent her final years being lovingly cared for by her daughter, Laree, and surrounded by her family.
Wilma was born on November 23, 1923 in Butler, Alabama. She graduated from Choctaw County High School in 1941, before marrying George Desak in October, 1943. Wilma was the glue which held her family together--she was steadfast, infinitely generous, and always knew a better way to do things. Despite the numerous tragedies in her life, it was rare to hear her complain. She spent the better part of her life caring for her children, her grandchildren, and then her mother. She found joy in working hard and it took over 90 years to teach her how to relax and let others take the wheel. Late in life she became a voracious reader (devouring the entirety of the large print section at the library). She made the best catfish dinner in the South.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Desak; her parents, Wilmer and Lucille Hicks; her brothers, William (Billy) and Lindsay Carlton (Tonnie); and two daughters, Helen Desak and Robin Mattingly. She is survived by her daughter, Laree Taylor (Robert); her sister-in-law, Reba Oliver; her grandchildren, Ian Taylor (Christine), Allie Taylor, Tatiana Taylor, Tommy Mattingly, Jeffrey Mattingly, Kenny Mattingly, Robbie Mattingly and Jenny Kotowske, as well as many great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Mobile, AL.
Wilma left this earth as she lived upon it--without fear and without a fuss. She will be missed more than words can express and her many lessons will be treasured forever. The family will receive friends at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Friday, November 17, 2017 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Graveside services will follow at 1:00 PM in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
